Phyllostachys aureaPhyllostachys aurea

Golden Bamboo. A lovely bamboo with dark green canes maturing to a golden yellow. Nice and bushy and excellent as a screen. Will reach a height of between 3.5 and 5 metres. Easy to distinguish from other bamboos by the crowded nodes at the base of the canes. One of the most reliable bamboos and a popular alternative to the black bamboo.

 



Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Alata'

A wonderfully obliging fast-growing bamboo, it is one of the first to send up new culms. A dark almost purple / green stem bamboo suitable as a specimen, in a container, as a screen or tasty snack as the new shoots in spring are a wonderful addition to your stir-fry. Can reach between 3 to 4 metres in height.

Crookstem Bamboo. A wonderfully dainty bamboo with bright gold canes and airy foliage. The emerging canes are blushed pink in strong sunlight, making this a very attractive specimen bamboo. It reaches around 4 to 5 metres in height so is ideal for hedging or screening. It does well in a container and looks stunning on a patio as a main feature plant.

Crookstem Bamboo. One of the first bamboos to shoot in the spring. Expect brilliant gold canes flushed pink in summer with vertical green stripes. Should reach 4 to 5 metres in height when planted in the ground in a sunny position. The occasional bending of the canes is particular to this bamboo, hence its common name. You'll be the envy of your neighbours with this bamboo!

Simply one of the biggest bamboos you can grow in this country. Allowing plenty of food and water, this plant can reach heights of up to 6 metres. It makes a fantastic specimen with its openly spaced canes and longer than normal branches. If planted in full sun in good, rich soil, then you will soon be harvesting your own scaffolding poles, just like in the Orient!

Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Castillonis'

If you are after a big gold bamboo with green stripes, then this one has got to be in contention. It soon produces huge new culms and grows incredibly well in rich, fertile soil and a bright position. It is not recommended for the small garden unless you are quite mad - it can reach a height of 6 metres when it's happy. Plant it, stand back and watch it grow in awe!

One of the bigger bamboos, this is an especially striking dark green caned variety which is dotted randomly with brown blotches (hence the common name). Can reach up to 6 metres in height with nice chunky canes. It always looks lush and healthy and works brilliantly as a specimen in a lawn where you can appreciate the full effect of this plant.

Phyllostachys bissettii

Bissett's Bamboo. A striking bamboo with glossy grey-green canes. A very strong growing species that retains its dark, fresh green colour throughout the worst winter. It produces masses of leaves and can grow up to 5 metres in height. Ideal for a tough hedge or as a specimen. One of our best sellers as a hedging plant due to its dense canopy. A great value bamboo.

Moso. Giant timber bamboo from China which can produce huge canes up to 20cm or more in diameter in warmer climates. It is hardy outside in the U.K. but needs a warm sheltered garden to achieve tis full potential. To see it in all its glory, visit Trebah Gardens in Cornwall and be simply stunned by this magnificent bamboo.

 



Phyllostachys humilis

A very pretty small leaved bamboo with stunning dark new shoots. The resulting new canes tend to be purple-green in colour and are beautifully offset by the pale green leaves. It will be ideal for a container if kept well watered and fed. One of the smaller Phyllostachys, reaching around 2.5 to 3 metres in height. A lovely bamboo to start with.

Black Bamboo. This is perhaps the most popular and best known bamboo of them all. It needs to be in a sunny position for the newly emerging canes to turn jet black within 18 months or so. The bamboo looks spectacular wherever it is planted, be it in a hedge or by itself. Excellent in a container if well fed and watered. Ideal for the budding bamboo enthusiast!

 



Phyllostachys nigra 'Boryana'
A nice variation on the black bamboo, 'Boryana' produces thick green canes with large brown spots, giving it the name 'Tortoiseshell'. A medium sized bamboo that will do well in a bright position in fertile, well-drained soil. It is excellent as a specimen plant due to its striking appearance and open canopy. A must for the bamboosiast!

One of the fastest growing and largest bamboos for the U.K. it easily reaches a height of 5 metres or more. The moss green canes are quite widely spaced so this bamboo needs room to grow. The lower branches can be trimmed to show the canes at their best. Fantastic glossy canes and large leaves make this an excellent choice.

Simply he biggest and best golden bamboo! It will reach a similar size to the species but has amazing gold canes with intermittent green striping. Perhaps the best specimen bamboo you can grow - just make sure you feed and water it well for the best results. If you have room for a big bamboo, either planted or in a large conatiner, then this is the one!

Phyllostachys vivax 'Huanvenzhu'Phyllostachys vivax 'Huanvenzhu'

A wonderful variety of the normal P. vivax with a yellow stripe on the sulcus. It is remarkably cold tolerant and a very tough bamboo in general and does not take long to reach a good size. It will do very well in good, rich soil in a prominent, sunny position. If you want a slightly different big bamboo for your garden, then this is the one.
