Trees:Eucalypts
A lovely tree with white or grey-white peeling bark, leaves round when young followed by peppermint-scented narrow grey-green, adult leaves. It makes a fine specimen tree and should be planted in free draining soil in a nice, sunny position. Should be pruned regularly for the first couple of years to avoid leggy growth.
A fast growing Eucalyptus whose young shoots are bright orange in colour. As it matures, the trunk takes on wonderful shades of white, cream and fawn. If regularly pruned, it can be kept to a manageable large shrub; if it is left to its own devices, then it forms a majestic tree.
Silver Top. A bold large leaved Eucalyptus. Nitens makes a small to medium sized tree showing good vigour when young. It has a very jungly exotic appearance and almost square stems on young growth. Best in a sunny position when it can also be grown as a striking container plant.
Snow Gum. This is a lovely small tree that is normally quite hard to come by. It originates from New South Wales and differs from the species due to its wider leaves and striking snakeskin bark. It is one of our favourites here and will do well in most soils, as long as it has plenty of sun.
Spinning Gum. Lovely slender Eucalyptus suitable for smaller gardens. Has two distinct leaf forms: when young they are round and fused in the centre to the stem. When they eventually die the joint to the stem breaks and the leaf remains spinning round the stem in the wind! When mature, the leaves are long and sickle shaped adding to the appeal of this fine tree.
