Trees:Conifers
Introduced from Chile by the Victorians, this slow growing conifer is immediately recognised by its spirally arranged pointed leaves. It will do best in a rich loamy soil and will tolerate a reasonable amount of wind as long as it is not salt laden. A superb large specimen tree for the exotic garden.
Beautiful large tree with spreading branches, pendant at the tips. Glaucous green needle-like leaves and barrel-shaped cones, green at first ripening brown. Would prefer a neutral to slightly acidic soil and plenty of water until it is established. A lovely specimen tree with cascading foliage.
Arizona Cypress. A small to medium sized evergreen tree of dense conical habit. Foliage is a lovely bluish grey. Tolerant of a wind and exposure and reasonably fast growing. Will benefit from occasional trimming to keep its shape. A particularly good characteristic is the smell of the leaves when crushed - wonderful!
Leyland Cypress. Excellent cultivar of the Leyland Cypress, first introduced from Ireland in the 1960's. It tends to be slower growing than the species, so is easier to keep under control. The young foliage is golden yellow, maturing to bronze-green when mature. Should be kept well watered until established and clipped once or twice a year to help maintain a dense, bushy habit.
Italian Cypress. A narrow almost pencil-like coniferous tree with dark green foliage and prickly brown cones. Tolerant of poor soils and best in a sunny spot. It will grow quite happily in a container as long as it has regular watering. Clip regularly to maintain a compact, neat appearance.
